Our Celtic Tree Trail
Our Celtic Tree Trail, set in the heart of Ireland’s Ancient East in South Co. Carlow, will show guests the world of the Celts and their reverence for Ireland’s native trees. Watch our specially commissioned 16-minute film showcasing who the Celts were and why they loved their trees.
Why did the Celts categorise groups of trees into Nobles, Commoners, Lower Divisions of the Wood and Bushes of the Wood? On our Celtic Tree Trail, you will find out the secrets of the trees. We will visit our specially commissioned Ogham Stone set in 5 acres of young Oak and tell the story of this ancient type of writing and how it was so closely related to the native trees of Ireland 2500 years ago.
The high-point of our Celtic Tree Trail is when we go out to visit each Noble tree (all of which we have on our grounds) and we tell the uses and mythology of each tree as well as the penalty or Díre for cutting down, or damaging a Noble in Celtic Times. On our Celtic Tree Trail guests will receive or sample something very special from the Trees. Gifts going back thousands of years when Ireland was probably one of the most forested countries in Europe.
These old trees have stories to tell. Stories of our forebears the Celts. Stories of mystery, folklore, tradition and history. The Chieftain trees as Thomas Gray said “dreaming out their old stories to the wind” Hear these stories with us, on our Celtic Tree Trail.
