Five kilometres outside the Georgian village of Borris is Blackstairs Eco Trails, ideal for foragers and nature enthusiasts. With the eponymous mountain range keeping a watchful eye over proceedings, the biodiverse glamping destination has been deservedly certified by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. After swimming or canoeing on its lake, guests can accompany the diverse wildlife and explore the surrounding fields, meadows and gardens. That’s if they can draw themselves away from Piper, the much-loved rescue cat.

WHY VISIT BLACKSTAIRS ECO TRAILS

FOR WILD ADVENTURES AND MEMORIES

Thank you for visiting our website. Our Eco Centre is situated 5 kilometres from the Georgian village of Borris in South Carlow, at the foot of the Backstairs Mountains. It is a beautiful area with Mount Leinster looking down at us from the East and to the South there is the magnificent River Barrow, 119 miles long and Ireland’s second longest river. The area is perfect for walking, hiking and cycling. If you are into nature or wildlife, this area of South Carlow is completely unspoilt and rich in biodiversity.

Blackstairs Eco Trails is a Gold accredited Eco Tourism, destination certified by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. We do not use fertilisers or sprays on our land and we have been recording the wild life here for over 40 years. There is a young, 5-acre Oak wood which guests can explore. There is a trail through the wood which is a haven for birds, summer migrants and mammals. We are very lucky to have a small lake which guests can use for swimming and a canoe for romantic trips round our small island. There are fields, a wild flower meadow and a classical Old Rose Garden for guest’s enjoyment.

Our Eco Barn has all the facilities guests need for a stay in our Shepherds Huts or for attending any of our workshops. There is also a BBQ area with seating and a small stream running through the chill- out zone in front to the Barn.

A wooden swing along our old Beech walk is always in use. We have a charging point for guests driving an electric vehicle. If you see a cat around the place, her name is Piper and she is very friendly!

We look forward to welcoming you to Blackstairs Eco Trails

Mary and Robert.

I have been to Blackstairs Ecotrails many times with my family and give it my highest recommendation. It's an opportunity for us to all reconnect with nature and learn from the well of knowledge that is Mary and Robert. It's become our favourite annual trip every year.

The Blackstairs eco centre's Foraging workshop proved to be a delightful day out.. Highly recommended!
Passionate about their patch, we were treated to a tour of Mary & Robert's garden and meadow at the wonderful Old Rectory they call home.
The centre was originally the old stables and was ideal for our group where we were treated to a very excellent home made lunch, followed by a Bake-off making Nettle & cheese scones from our foraging earlier.
The foraging takes the form of an easy stroll around their meadow with Mary & Robert pointing out the huge variety of grasses, plants and trees that happily grow together naturally. You get to taste, as you go... And don't forget to ask about the mushrooms. There are 4000 varieties apparently!!
As participants of the Reaps scheme they are happy to share their very extensive knowledge & expertise. As Eco friendly as it gets.
Very interesting and enjoyable day out
