WHO WE ARE

Robert and Mary White have been running Blackstairs Ecotrails since 2011.

We have lived at the Old Rectory for over 44 years. We love where we live and what we do. Robert is a geographer and mathematician. I am a former member of the Irish Parliament and a former Minister for Human Rights, Equality and Integration. We have been recording the wild life and biodiversity here for many, many years. Dorothy-Ellen, our daughter, is also a geographer and a partner with us in the business. Our motto is Keep it Wild and Keep it Small and Sustainable. We look forward to welcoming you to our Eco Centre.

Where are we situated?

In the shadow of Mount Leinster at the foot of the Blackstairs Mountains, five kilometres from the beautiful Georgian village of Borris in Co. Carlow.

What our guests say

I have been to Blackstairs Ecotrails many times with my family and give it my highest recommendation. It's an opportunity for us to all reconnect with nature and learn from the well of knowledge that is Mary and Robert. It's become our favourite annual trip every year.
The Blackstairs eco centre's Foraging workshop proved to be a delightful day out.. Highly recommended! Passionate about their patch, we were treated to a tour of Mary & Robert's garden and meadow at the wonderful Old Rectory they call home. The centre was originally the old stables and was ideal for our group where we were treated to a very excellent home made lunch, followed by a Bake-off making Nettle & cheese scones from our foraging earlier. The foraging takes the form of an easy stroll around their meadow with Mary & Robert pointing out the huge variety of grasses, plants and trees that happily grow together naturally. You get to taste, as you go... And don't forget to ask about the mushrooms. There are 4000 varieties apparently!! As participants of the Reaps scheme they are happy to share their very extensive knowledge & expertise. As Eco friendly as it gets. Very interesting and enjoyable day out
